Project, Program, Portfolio, Value Stream Master Class
Description
Day one introduces the concept of a value stream leading from the expressed objectives of different stakeholders to delivering benefits and value to stakeholders. We will also discuss the need for a holistic view (even for project managers) of the activities requiring resources, whether they are projects or day-to-day activities. We’ll see how a good architecture can minimize effort and maximize value.
As a follow-on from day one, day two focuses on how to clearly connect strategic objectives from different stakeholders to outputs from projects and how to select those that offer the greatest value for the least effort. We will use tools like roadmaps, the Benefits Breakdown Structure (BBS), and value index to make these connections. Finally, day two will use examples to emphasize the need for collaborative procurement and participative budgeting in a public organization context.
On day three we will explore how an appropriate life cycle approach will enable program and project managers to deal with a complex stakeholders’ context and often changing goalposts. We will explore different ways to measure and show progress towards objectives and how demonstrating this progress keeps stakeholders engaged. Finally, we will discuss how, beyond project deliverables, the transition and integration of project outputs into the community provides the greatest value.
The program closes with an overview of value stream improvement and a hands-on workshop where we will use concepts, techniques, and tools covered earlier to apply the value stream concepts on one of your initiatives. We’ll focus on identifying the value stream, impediments and improvement points; and looking for improvement solutions and how to implement them. Finally, we’ll see how setting values and principles can support the application of the value stream so that programs and projects are run more smoothly and in harmony with management and customers.
